Background of the Study
Archaeological evidence of warfare in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, provides crucial insights into the historical conflicts and power dynamics that have shaped the region. Remnants such as fortification structures, weaponry, and battlefield debris not only mark episodes of conflict but also offer a narrative of the socio-political transformations that occurred over centuries (Ifeoma, 2023). These materials serve as tangible records of struggles for territorial control, inter-group rivalries, and the evolution of defensive strategies. In recent years, renewed archaeological investigations have shed light on previously undocumented conflicts, challenging conventional historical accounts and revealing complex layers of warfare and peace-building (Chukwuemeka, 2024). The integration of archaeological data with oral traditions and historical texts provides a multifaceted perspective on warfare, contributing to a deeper understanding of the region’s past. Moreover, the study of warfare artifacts informs broader debates on the impact of conflict on cultural identity and community resilience. This research seeks to critically appraise the archaeological indicators of warfare in Nsukka, bridging gaps between historical narratives and material culture (Uche, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
The archaeological evidence of warfare in Nsukka is inadequately documented, leading to gaps in understanding the full extent and impact of historical conflicts in the area. Many artifacts and structural remnants remain unexcavated or improperly interpreted, hindering a comprehensive reconstruction of past hostilities (Amaka, 2023). In addition, limited interdisciplinary research has prevented the integration of archaeological data with oral histories, resulting in a fragmented historical narrative. This study addresses these deficiencies by systematically evaluating warfare-related artifacts and contextualizing them within broader historical and cultural frameworks (Chidera, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To document and analyze archaeological evidence of warfare in Nsukka.

  • To contextualize warfare artifacts within the socio-political history of the area.

  • To recommend strategies for integrated heritage documentation and preservation.

Research Questions:

  • What types of archaeological evidence indicate past warfare in Nsukka?

  • How do these artifacts correlate with known historical conflicts?

  • Which preservation methods can enhance the documentation of warfare heritage?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Archaeological artifacts in Nsukka provide reliable evidence of historical warfare.

  • H2: There is a significant relationship between material evidence and documented historical conflicts.

  • H3: Integrated research approaches improve the understanding and preservation of warfare heritage.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant for historians, archaeologists, and heritage managers as it deepens our understanding of warfare’s role in shaping regional identities. The findings will inform improved preservation practices and enrich historical narratives by integrating material culture with oral traditions, ultimately contributing to more nuanced interpretations of conflict and its legacy in Nsukka (Ezinne, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to appraising archaeological evidence of warfare in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, focusing solely on material remains and historical interpretations without incorporating modern conflict dynamics.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Warfare: Organized and often prolonged conflict between groups or states.

  • Artifact: An object made or modified by humans, typically of historical interest.

  • Heritage Documentation: The systematic recording and preservation of cultural and historical assets.
